Adjectives: A Refresher Course for 9th Graders
Adjective: A word that modifies or describes a noun (people, places, things, or ideas) or pronoun (when using the specific name of a noun) Examples: big, beautiful, happy. Comparative Adjective: An adjective that compares two nouns or pronouns. Examples: bigger, more beautiful, happier. Superlative Adjective: An adjective that compares three or more nouns or pronouns. Examples: biggest, most beautiful, happiest.
Concepts:
Separate three or more adjectives in a row with a comma whether or not the word "and" in used. Add -er at the end of most one-syllable adjectives to form the comparative. For two-syllable words ending in y, change the y to i and add -er. (happy->happier) For short words ending in e, simply add -r (wide->wider) For short words with consonant/vowel/consonant (CVC) pattern, double the final consonant before adding -er. (hot->hotter)
