Name the three main parts of an atom
Atoms are made of protons, neutrons, and electrons. Protons and neutrons form the nucleus of an atom. Electrons orbit the nucleus in a cloud-like structure.
Atom Structure
Atom: The basic unit of matter which is made up of three subatomic particles: protons, neutrons and electrons. Proton: A positively charged subatomic particle found in the nucleus of an atom. Electron: A negatively charged subatomic particle found orbiting the nucleus of an atom.
Concepts:
The nucleus of an atom is made up of protons and neutrons, which are held together by a strong nuclear force. The nucleus of an atom is so small in comparison to the size of an atom that it is equal to the size of a grain of salt compared to the size of a football field. The electrons found in an atom are much smaller than the protons and neutrons. They are so small that they are equal to the size of a marble compared to the size of a football field.

Question: What is the structure of an atom? Clues: • Atoms are made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. • Protons have a positive charge, neutrons have no charge and electrons have a negative charge. • Protons and neutrons are located in the center of the atom in a nucleus and electrons are located in orbits surrounding the nucleus. In pairs: Select and solve one of the tasks: A. Work in pairs and draw the structure of an atom. B. Explain to your partner how the structure of an atom affects its behavior.
