Social skills help us to interact with others in positive ways. Being able to read social cues and respond to them appropriately can help us build relationships with others. Developing good social skills can help us in our academic and personal lives.
Importance of Social Skills
Empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. Active Listening: the process of listening attentively to someone in order to better understand them. Social Intelligence: the ability to understand social situations and the people within them. Following Directions: quickly doing what we are asked to. Make sure the person is done talking before you begin working.
Concepts:
Cooperating: being respectful of each other, using communication and listening skills, and dividing up work to achieve a common goal. Eye Contact: looking someone in the eye while they are talking helps both people focus on the conversation and read facial expressions. Politeness: behavior that is respectful and considerate. Examples are smiling, saying "please" and "thank you," holding the door for someone.

Social skills are important for success in the workplace. Studies show that employers are more likely to hire someone who is good at communication and collaboration over someone who has a higher IQ. According to research, people with strong social skills are more likely to be perceived as attractive by others and have more successful relationships. Social skills are not only important for adults, but can be developed in children as young as three years old.
