Name one way sound travels.
Sounds are vibrations that travel through the air or other substances. We hear sound with our ears and can detect different pitches and volumes. We encounter sounds everyday, from music to car horns to birds chirping!
Sounds Around Us
Sound is a type of energy made by vibrations. It is the movement of energy through air, water, or other substances that can be heard by our ears. Sound waves are vibrations of air that travel in straight lines away from the source of the sound. Frequency is the number of sound waves that pass a certain point in a certain amount of time. Frequency is measured in hertz (Hz). Low frequencies create a low pitched sound and high frequencies create a high pitched sound.
Concepts:
Sound is the fastest form of energy, traveling at 767 miles per second. The loudest sound ever recorded was the exploding Krakatoa volcano in 1883, which was heard 3,000 miles away. The human ear can detect over 10 million different tones or frequencies.

Fun Sounds!
Sound is a form of energy, made by vibrations moving through air, water, or another medium. Sound travels in waves, which are made of areas of high pressure (compression) and low pressure (rarefaction). Sound needs a medium to travel through, such as air, water, wood, or metal.
Concepts:
When sound travels through a solid, it is called a seismic wave. The loudest sound ever recorded was a volcanic eruption in 1883, which produced a sound of around 180 dB. Most human ears can hear frequencies between 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.
