The debate has been neck and neck, and all that’s left is closing arguments. You and your debate partner have one chance to present your team’s final points. Can you write an air tight closing argument and seal the victory? Based on the opposing team’s main claim, students must choose evidence that directly counters their opponent’s position. If their closing argument can prove why their claim is the best, they win! Use this story-based writing activity to practice writing short argumentative responses with a counterclaim. To customize the lesson, type in a topic for the debate and select your grade level, then let closing arguments begin.
