What is the difference between area and perimeter?
Area is the amount of space inside a shape. Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. We measure area and perimeter in units like square inches, feet, yards, etc.
Area & Perimeter
Area - is the amount of space inside a two-dimensional shape. It is measured in square units (such as cm2). Perimeter - is the length of the outer edge of a two-dimensional shape. It is measured in linear units (such as cm). Lateral Area - is the area of the sides of a three-dimensional shape. It is measured in square units (such as cm2).
Concepts:
The area of a rectangle is the product of its length and width. If a rectangle’s sides are doubled, its area is quadrupled. The area of a circle is known as the circle’s “zone of influence”, or the space inside the circle’s perimeter. The circumference of a circle is the same as its perimeter, but the area is always different.

Question: What is the area and perimeter of a rectangle with a width of 8 and a length of 6? Clues: • Area is the amount of space inside the rectangle. To find the area, multiply the length and width. • Perimeter is the distance around the rectangle. To find the perimeter, add the width and length and double the sum. • Remember to include the units of measurement with your answer. In pairs: Select and solve one of the tasks: A. Draw a picture to show the rectangle with a width of 8 and a length of 6. B. Explain to your partner how you would find the area and perimeter of your rectangle.
