Characterization
The creation or construction of a fictional character.
Direct Characterization
The author tells us directly what the character is like. "[Steve Randle] was cocky, smart, and Soda's best budy since grade school."
What is an example of direct characterization in chapter 1?
Indirect Characterization
The author tells us implicitly about what a character is like. Requires us to make inferences and read between the lines. "Darry thinks his life is enough without inspecting other people's."
Indirect Characterization
Say- what does the character say? how do they say it? Think- what are the character's thoughts? Effect- what effect do they have on other characters? what interactions do they have? Acts- what is the chacter's behavior? Looks- what is their physical appearance?
