Charlemagne (742-814) was a Frankish King who united most of Western Europe during the Middle Ages. He was crowned 'Emperor of the Romans' by the Pope in 800 and established the Carolingian dynasty. His empire included modern-day France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and parts of Italy and Spain.
