During the Nazi occupation of Norway, Tromsø was the site of a secret radio station which was used to beam coded messages to Britain. In 1942, the Norwegian physicist, Leif Tronstad, who was also a resistance fighter, escaped from Tromsø in a fishing boat to England, where he was put to work on the development of the atomic bomb.
