Name one material that is strong.
Learning objective:
SC.5.3.1.C Make observations and measurements to identify materials
based on their properties.
Identifying Materials by Their Properties
Materials have different properties like hardness, flexibility, and conductivity. We can use these properties to identify different materials. Try using a magnifying glass to observe materials up close!
Did you know?
Some materials can be identified by their ability to conduct electricity. Conductors are materials that allow electricity to flow through them, while insulators are materials that limit the flow of electricity. Materials can also be identified by their ability to absorb or reflect light. Some materials absorb light while others have a shiny or glossy surface that reflects light. Materials can also be identified by their ability to bend or deform. Some materials are flexible and can bend easily, while other materials are rigid and are difficult to deform.
Work together in pairs: What property is the best way to differentiate between a rock and a piece of metal?
Can you think of a material that is transparent and allows light to pass through easily?

Work together in pairs: Q: What properties are used to identify a material?
Brain break: Draw an extremely long and silly looking dinosaur wearing a tutu and balancing a spoon on its nose.
Which material is hard and shiny?
Which material is transparent and can be easily shaped?
Which material is soft, fluffy, and used to make pillows?
