"To understand the key features of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #3: Good health and wellbeing: key feature - maternal and child health and wellbeing"
Learning objective:
Maternal mortality refers to the death of a woman during pregnancy, childbirth, or within 42 days of termination of pregnancy. The World Health Organization estimates that over 800 women die every day due to preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Reducing the number of maternal deaths is an important global health goal, and can be achieved through access to quality healthcare.
Maternal Mortality: A Global Issue
Maternal Mortality: A death resulting from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth within 42 days of the end of the pregnancy. Direct Maternal Mortality: A death resulting from a direct complication of the pregnancy, childbirth, or the management of either. Indirect Maternal Mortality: A death resulting from a pre-existing disease or a disease that developed during pregnancy, but not due to the direct effects of the pregnancy or delivery.
Concepts:
Maternal mortality rates are more than three times higher in rural areas than in urban areas in some countries. The lifetime risk of a woman dying from maternal causes is 1 in 3700 in industrialized countries, compared to 1 in 180 in sub-Saharan Africa. The leading cause of maternal death is postpartum hemorrhage, accounting for 25% of all maternal deaths.
