A mixture is a combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined. The substances in a mixture can be separated by physical means. A solution is a mixture of two substances in which one substance is dissolved in the other. The substance that is dissolved is called the solute and the substance that is doing the dissolving is called the solvent. Saturation is the point at which no more solute can be dissolved in a solvent. This means that the solution is at its maximum capacity for solute.

Salt water can be made into a mixture by adding sugar, and then can be turned into a solution by heating the mixture. Oil and water can form an emulsion, where the oil is suspended evenly throughout the water. Mixtures can be classified as either homogeneous or heterogeneous depending on the degree to which the components are mixed together.

We have learned that ingredients come together to create mixtures and solutions. Blue Bell needs a new flavor. Your challenge is: Create a new flavor with a partner on a whiteboard to submit to Blue Bell. Explain how it is a mixture or solution. We will share our flavors with the class.
