What do you think is inside the earth?
The Earth has different layers, like the crust, mantle, and core. Plate tectonics is the movement of of pieces of the crust. This movement causes earthquakes, volcanoes, and mountains.
Earth's Layers and Plate Tectonics
Work together in pairs: What are the four major layers of the Earth?
The top layer of the earth is called the CRUST. It is only about 25 miles deep. It has deep cracks in it - like a cracked eggshell. Those cracks are called FAULT LINES. The "pieces of shell" are called PLATES, and they actually float on the MANTLE. The Earth's plates are constantly being created or destroyed, as they are pushed together or pulled apart.

Work together in pairs: What is plate tectonics?
Why do you think earthquakes and volcano eruptions occur more frequently at the edges of tectonic plates?

Which layer of the Earth is made up of tectonic plates?
What is the outermost layer of the Earth called?
What happens when two tectonic plates collide with each other?
- They can either form mountains or cause earthquakes.
- They move away from each other.
What is the layer just beneath the crust?
- Inner Core
- fault line
- Outer Core
