It was the first American expedition to cross the western portion of the United States. The expedition had many goals, including mapping the land, establishing friendly relations with Native American tribes, and finding an all-water route to the Pacific Ocean.
Lewis and Clark named more than 100 previously unknown plants and animals during their expedition. Lewis and Clark met with over 50 Native American tribes during their expedition. Lewis and Clark’s expedition was the first to cross the entire continent of North America.
