OSPE/OSCE
PRACTICAL: Hands-on application of knowledge & skills CLINICAL: Hands-on applicationof clinical skills in close to real scenarios, including clinical competencies, decision-making, and patient interaction skills EXAMINATION: systematic assessment of practical skills in a controlled environment

TYPES OF STATIONS
Clinical stations: Interaction between the student and a real or simulated patient. Such stations will usually have one or two clinical examiners present to score the students’ performance

TYPES OF STATIONS
Practical stations: Performance of a technical procedure Often using a piece of equipment or a simulation device (e.g. giving an injection; performing CPR)

TYPES OF STATIONS
Static stations: Do not involve any physical interaction Interpretation of data and images or writing management plans and prescriptions. Students complete their tasks and record their responses on a structured answer sheet which are collected for marking

CONDUCTING AN OSPE/OSCE
Step 1: Pre-Session Preparations Station Readiness: Set up each station with required materials, equipment, and standardized patients (if applicable). Verify that all stations are functioning properly and are adequately prepared. Examiner Training: Provide examiners with comprehensive training on station objectives, assessment criteria, and scoring guidelines. Address any questions or concerns examiners may have. Student Orientation: Brief students about the assessment process, station rotations, time limits, and expectations. Clarify any doubts and ensure they are aware of the assessment flow

Step 2: During the Assessment Station Rotation: Ensure a smooth flow of students through stations according to the pre-determined sequence. Monitor time to ensure students have ample time to complete tasks. Monitoring and Support: Be available to address any logistical issues, technical glitches, or emergencies that may arise. Ensure standardized patients follow the prescribed scenarios and guidelines. Examiner Guidance: Supervise examiners to ensure they follow standardized assessment procedures and remain consistent. Offer assistance if examiners encounter difficulties.

Step 3: Post-Assessment Procedures Data Collection: Collect assessment scores, feedback, and any additional observations made by examiners. Data Analysis: Analyze collected data to identify overall performance trends and areas of concern. Feedback and Reporting: Provide timely and meaningful feedback to students based on their performance. Share assessment outcomes with relevant stakeholders, such as faculty and program coordinators
