OBJECTIVE: You will explore the phases of the moon and explain how the Moon's Rotation and Revolution relate to the pattern of Lunar Phases.
PHASES OF THE MOON-ESS1-A
What are the four primary phases of the moon and how long does each phase typically last?
What is the name of the first phase of the moon?
The Moon goes through 8 phases in a cycle: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent. Each phase of the Moon is named after the amount of light it reflects to the Earth. The Moon's cycle takes about 29.5 days to complete one cycle.
The 8 Phases of the Moon
Lunar Cycle - The cycle of the moon's phases that occurs over the course of 29.5 days. Waxing Moon - The phase of the moon where it appears to grow in size from new moon to full moon. Waning Moon - The phase of the moon where it appears to shrink in size from full moon to new moon.
Concepts:
The moon is actually moving away from the Earth at a rate of 3.8 cm every year. During a lunar eclipse, the moon turns a deep red color due to the Earth's atmosphere. There is a small amount of water vapor on the moon, which is why it looks brighter during a full moon.

Question: What causes the different phases of the moon? Clues: • The moon does not produce its own light. • The amount of light that is seen from Earth is based on the moon's position in its orbit around the Earth. • The moon takes about 29.5 days to orbit the Earth. In pairs: Select and solve one of the tasks: A. Draw a picture of the moon's orbit around the Earth and explain how it relates to the phases of the moon. B. Explain the relationship between the moon's position and the amount of light seen from Earth.
