In the 1st century, Christianity started in the Roman Empire and spread rapidly. It grew to become the official religion of the Roman Empire in the 4th century. Throughout the Middle Ages, Christianity had a major influence on art, literature, culture, and politics.

Christianity appealed to the poor in Rome. Most early converts were women. Eventually it appealed to the Roman soldiers which caused it to become more tolerated. The plague led to many people converting to Christianity.
