September 11, 2001 (9/11) was a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda against the United States. The attacks killed 2,977 people and injured more than 6,000 others.
The attacks included the hijacking of four commercial planes and crashing them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
The 9/11 attacks were the deadliest terrorist attack in human history and the most devastating foreign attack on U.S. soil since the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.
