Decimals are a way of writing numbers that can represent fractions. They use a decimal point and numbers to the right of it. Decimals are used to measure and compare amounts that are less than one whole unit. For example, 0.5 is the same as 1/2 and 0.25 is the same as 1/4.
What are Decimals?
Decimal: A number that is expressed as a fraction with a denominator of 10, 100, 1000, etc. Place Value: The value of a digit in a number based on its position in the number. Rounding: The process of estimating a number to the nearest whole number, ten, hundred, etc.
Concepts:
The decimal point can be read in two different ways. In some countries it is referred to as a 'comma' and in other countries it is referred to as a 'full stop'. The Babylonians were the first to use a numerical system based on decimals thousands of years ago. The number Pi, which is used for calculating the circumference or area of circles, is an irrational number and is written to an infinite number of decimal places.
