The periodic table is divided into eight main groups. These are the alkali metals, alkaline earth metals, transition metals, halogens, noble gases, lanthanides, actinides, and nonmetals. Alkali metals are the elements located in Group 1 of the periodic table. They are soft, silvery-white metals that react vigorously with water. Alkaline earth metals are the elements in Group 2. They are heavy, solid metals that are less reactive than alkali metals.
