It is formed by the groups and communities a person is a part of. IDENTITY POLITICS: a political approach that is based on people's sense of their racial, religious, ethnic, social, and cultural identity. IDENTITY FORMATION: the process of developing a distinct identity or sense of self during adolescence.

The concept of identity and of having an identity is not something that is unique to humans. Even non-human primates such as chimpanzees have a sense of identity. Most countries have laws that allow people to legally change their identities if they wish. The term 'identity' is derived from the Latin word 'identitas,' which translates to 'sameness.'
