Plant & Animal Cells
Plant cells have a cell wall, chloroplasts, and a large central vacuole. Animal cells have a nucleus, mitochondria, and various organelles. Both types of cells are made of cytoplasm, cell membrane, and ribosomes.
5. Poll
60 seconds
Would you rather be a plant cell and produce your own food through photosynthesis, or be an animal cell and have the ability to move and explore different environments?
  • Be a plant cell and produce food through photosynthesis
  • Be an animal cell and have the ability to move and explore environments

Plant & Animal Cells
Cell Membrane: A thin, protective layer that surrounds a cell. It acts as a barrier between the cell and its environment.
Cell Wall: A rigid layer of protection around the cell membrane that provides structure and support to the cell.
Organelles: Specialized structures inside a cell that perform various jobs and functions. Examples include the nucleus, mitochondria, and chloroplasts.

Did you know?
Plant cells contain chloroplasts which are organelles that contain the pigment chlorophyll which helps plants to photosynthesize and make their own food. Animal cells don't have a cell wall like plant cells but instead have other protective structures like the cell membrane. Plant cells also contain another organelle called the vacuole which helps to store substances like sugars and salts.
8. Poll
60 seconds
Would you rather be a plant cell that can photosynthesize or an animal cell that can move freely?
  • Be a plant cell that can photosynthesize
  • Be an animal cell that can move freely

Question: The cells of plants and animals have similar structures, yet they are very different. What are the 3 main differences between plant and animal cells?
Look for the organelles that are unique to plants or animals. Think about how the cells use energy, get rid of waste, and take in nutrients. Research the different types of cell walls that plants and animals have.
A: Work in pairs to draw a Venn Diagram that shows the differences between plant and animal cells. B: Explain your diagram to the class.
