An nth root is a number that can be multiplied by itself a certain number of times to get another number. For example, the 9th root of a number is the number that when multiplied by itself 9 times equals the original number. For instance, the 9th root of 7,776 is 8 because 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 x 8 = 7,776.
What is an nth root?
Nth Root: A number, x, is said to be an nth root of another number, y, if x^n = y. For example, 2 is a square root of 4, because 2^2 = 4. Radicand: The number that is being rooted, or the number being inside the radical sign, is called the radicand. Root Index: The root index is the number written in the small number in the left corner of the radical. For example, in √9, the root index is 2. This means the root of 9 is 2.
The nth root of a number can be expressed as an exponent of the same number. For example, the 9th root of a number can be expressed as the number to the power of 1/9. The nth root of a number is the inverse operation of taking the nth power of a number. For example, the square root of a number is the inverse operation of taking the square power of the same number. The nth root of a number can be calculated with the help of a calculator, as long as the number is not a perfect power of the same number. For example, the 9th root of a number can be calculated with a calculator, but the 9th power of the number cannot be calculated without a calculator.
